A not goodbye lunch

A "see you later" (not "goodbye") lunch with Kristin before she and Joe move to DC. One of my favorite couples in the world, no lie. Follow their East Coast adventures on their blog.

Meanwhile: Cole's claim for best french dip in LA? I'm gonna have to go with Phillipe's on that one. But their old-fashioneds? Don Draper would be proud.

PDX to LAX, Day 3

Day 3: Wine tasting in Napa, a stop by Moylan's Brewery in Novato, and then putzing around San Fran by the hotel – which was in Fisherman's Wharf, so it was pretty much tourist central. All Europeans, and all wearing t-shirts that said either "San Francisco" or "Fisherman's Wharf" on them. Mildly amusing. Also happened across a huge elbow macaroni sculpture, and with my love of all things mac and cheese, had to take a picture.

PDX to LAX, Day 2

Day 1 of road trip: Lake Oswego to Lincoln City, then down the coast through southern Oregon into Crescent City just across the California border. Lots of driving along the ocean, all of it beautiful. Only lame part was getting a bogus speeding ticket from a cop who I'm pretty sure was the cop in Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. You know, the one that asks Kumar what kind of name is that anyhow, five O's and two U's, etc. Translation: guy was a jerk.

Day 2 began with a stop through the redwoods. It's mind-blowing how huge (and old) these trees are. Took the dusty and unpaved Howland Hill Rd. through Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and spent a bit of time exploring. Found a random creek way down the side of the road and taught my mom how to skip stones. (Sidenote: I'm pretty sure I could skip stones all day).

In the other photos: the Crescent City coastline, Mom picking some stones from the beach, and me drinking Supplication and Sanctification at Russian River Brewery in Santa Rosa. I have no taste buds left.

Monkey! Bring me my sake!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7654267.stm

A restaurant in Japan has some unusual waiting staff on its books – two macaque monkeys.

Yatchan and Fukuchan serve customers hot towels and drinks, and are given soya beans as tips.

The monkeys are family pets who have been allowed to help in the bar. Animal rights regulations mean the premises have been visited to ensure the creatures are not being mistreated.
